Brown Sugar Publishing Company began with a simple decision: if a seat at the table was not available, I would create my own table. I created Brown Sugar Publishing Company to bring Dede on the Go!™ stories to life and give voice to stories about lived experiences, culture, adventures, and belonging. These stories celebrate the everyday moments and the big adventures. They honor where we come from while giving children room to dream about where they can go.

Brown Sugar represents strength, beauty, and richness. It’s a name that reflects who we are and what we value. Brown Sugar Publishing Company was created to publish books about Dede and other stories that celebrate lived experiences, culture, adventures, and belonging. It is about creating space for stories that may not always be seen, but always deserve to be told.

Meet the Founder
Dr. Deidre “Dede” Stewart
I am an educator, author, and lifelong believer in the power of stories. My work in early childhood education, my love for children’s books, and my own life experiences inspired Dede, a curious, adventurous girl who reminds us that there is always more to explore.
Through Brown Sugar Publishing Company, I hope to create books and resources, including the Dede on the Go!™ series, that celebrate culture, family, and big possibilities for all children.
